Pope Pius XII
1876–1958 · Thomist Magisterium; Mystici Corporis; Mediator Dei
Pope 1939–1958; declared Venerable 2009.
Eugenio Pacelli, pope through the Second World War, who defined the Assumption (1950), taught the Church as Mystical Body (Mystici Corporis, 1943), opened Catholic biblical scholarship to historical method within the faith (Divino Afflante Spiritu, 1943), set the charter of the liturgical movement (Mediator Dei, 1947), and in Humani Generis (1950) warned against the “new theology,” evolutionism applied to dogma, polygenism and the denial of pure nature.
Why he matters: The last pope of the fully pre-conciliar Church and in many ways the preparer of the Council; his teaching on liturgy, Scripture, medicine and the state remains the reference point for the Thomist tradition in the twentieth century.
