Pope Pius XI

1857–1939 · Social kingship of Christ; social doctrine; Catholic Action

Catholic Latin

Pope 1922–1939.

Achille Ratti, librarian, alpinist and nuncio to Poland, who proclaimed the feast of Christ the King (Quas Primas, 1925), articulated subsidiarity in Quadragesimo Anno (1931), condemned Nazism in Mit Brennender Sorge and communism in Divini Redemptoris (both 1937), defended Christian marriage in Casti Connubii, promoted Catholic Action and the Eastern Churches, and signed the Lateran Treaty.

Why he matters: Gave the Church her fullest statement of Christ's social kingship and her mature social doctrine, and stood against both totalitarianisms of the century.
