Hilaire Belloc

1870–1953 · Distributism; Catholic historiography

Catholic Latin

Anglo-French poet, historian and Liberal MP who held that “Europe is the Faith,” that the Reformation was the great wound of Christendom, and that industrial capitalism and socialism alike lead to “The Servile State,” from which only the wide distribution of property can save free men. His “Path to Rome” and “The Four Men” are classics of Catholic prose.

Why he matters: Co-founder of Distributism and the chief polemicist of the English Catholic revival; his historical thesis shaped how English-speaking Catholics read Europe for half a century.

Where to be careful

Some of his writing on Jews (“The Jews,” 1922) and his admiration for certain authoritarian regimes are not to be followed; his history is often partisan.
